Zip code, also known as Zone Improvement Plan is a system of numbers devised by the United States Postal Service to ensure your mail moves more efficitnetly. The basic zip code format is composed of five numerical digits. An extended zipcode which is composed of the five digits, a hyphen and then four more numberical digits. The extended zip code ensures that your mail is routed to an exact location.
Zipcodes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain area within the United States. The second and third digits together represent a region or a large city. The fourth and fifth digits of the zipcode represent a group of delivery addresses within that region.
Zipcodes do not necessarily fall within the boundries of the city; thus a zip code may be found within two bounding cities. When doing lookups, do not assume that because the zip code is found in one city that it is unique to that city alone. If the United States zip code is not accepted by the United States Postal Service a delay may result in your mail delivery.
Keep in mind that zip codes are sometimes changed and divided, especially when a rural area becomes suburban. Generally the new zip codes become effective once announced and a grace period mostly of one year is provided in which the new and old zip codes are used concurrently so that postal customers in the affected area can notify others, order new stationery, etc.
